Mission + History
Grants 2016-2017

BCHD provides funding to public and non-profit agencies to promote health and wellness in the communities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach.  Contracts are awarded to agencies that provide health-related services in those communities.  Contracts are awarded based upon evidence of program effectiveness, existing need and alignment with District health priorities.

Public Agencies

City of Hermosa Beach Fire Department
Award Amount: $21,840
Grant funds support the nurse educator for the continuing education of paramedics and the purchase of medical supplies for the ambulances.

  • 360 nurse educator hours
  • $8,340 in medical supplies
     

City of Manhattan Beach Fire Department
Award Amount: $29,364
Grant funds support the nurse educator for the continuing education of paramedics and the purchase of medical supplies for the ambulances.

City of Redondo Beach Fire Department
Award Amount: $48,000
Grant funds support the nurse educator for the continuing education of paramedics and the purchase of medical supplies for the ambulances.

City of Redondo Beach Police Department Domestic Violence Program
Award Amount: $39,813
Health Priority: Mindfulness, Social-Emotional Learning and Stress Reduction
Grant funds support a program coordinator for the Domestic Violence Advocacy program.  The coordinator and volunteers provide 24/7 response to police calls involving domestic violence.  Services include victim counseling, information and referral, and assistance with court appointments. During this fiscal year, the Domestic Violence Advocacy program responded to 335 incidents.
 

City of Redondo Beach Senior and Disabled Health Fair
Award Amount: $4,483
Health Priority: Nutrition and Exercise
The Senior and Disabled Health Fair occurs annually in October.  342 district residents participated in the health fair held in October of 2016.
 

Hermosa Beach City Schools District
Award Amount: Healthy Schools Grant $94,091, Principal’s Fund $6,000
Health Priority: Nutrition and Exercise, Mindfulness, Social-Emotional Learning and Stress Reduction, Substance Use Prevention, Bullying Prevention
The Hermosa Beach City Schools District completed the following to be eligible for their grant award:

  • Administered the annual California Healthy Kids Survey
  • Delivered CASEL approved social-emotional learning curriculum (MindUP)
  • Supported and coordinated delivery of NREPP-approved Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs curriculum (Project Alert)
  • Implemented LiveWell Kids to fidelity
  • Promoted active School Wellness Councils

The Healthy Schools Grant funds are distributed to the school district to off-set school counseling, physical education and curriculum purchases.  The Principal’s funds are released to each school site to support wellness activities.
 

Manhattan Beach Unified School District
Award Amount: Healthy Schools Grant $189,520, Principal’s Fund $21,000
Health Priority: Nutrition and Exercise, Mindfulness, Social-Emotional Learning and Stress Reduction, Substance Use Prevention, Bullying Prevention

  • Administered the annual California Healthy Kids Survey

  • Implemented Second Step in 6th grade
  • Promoted active School Wellness Councils

Award Amount: Healthy Schools Grant $361,091, Principal’s Fund $36,000, School Attendance Review Board $14,892

Non-Profit Agencies

Cancer Support Community
Award Amount: $45,402
Health Priority: Mindfulness, Social-Emotional Learning and Stress Reduction
The Cancer Support Community provides a variety of educational classes, fitness classes and support groups to assist individuals with cancer and their families with maintaining wellness and mental health.  This year BCHD funds supported:

  • 534 support groups
  • 13 educational workshops
  • 25 events
  • 58 community workshops
  • 370 health education sessions
  • 30 visualization and relaxation sessions
     

Center for the Partially Sighted
Award Amount: $4,373
In March, the Center for the Partially Sighted informed BCHD that they had left the South Bay area and would not be utilizing the grant funds.  No funds were paid to the Center for the Partially Sighted in the award period.
 

Easter Seals South Bay Adult Care Center
Award Amount: $9,324
Health Priority: Mindfulness, Social-Emotional Learning and Stress Reduction
Supervised activity center for individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities.  Allows family caregivers to work while their loved one socializes with others in a secure environment.  BCHD funds provided:

  • 12 Beach Cities residents with access
  • 739 days of supervised care
     

The Gathering Place
Award Amount:  $40,800
Health Priority: Mindfulness, Social-Emotional Learning and Stress Reduction
The Gathering Place provides grief and bereavement counseling to residents who are experiencing the death of a loved one.  Support groups include groups for children, teens and adults on a variety of topics including loss of spouse, loss of parent and loss of child.  This year The Gathering Place provided:

  • 31 groups
  • A total of 230 sessions
  • 81 unduplicated district residents
  • Grief counselors to Mira Costa High School, Hermosa Valley Middle School, Parras Middle School (Redondo Beach) and Redondo Union High School to support staff and students following the death of a student.
     

Salvation Army Meals on Wheels
Award Amount: $58, 045
Health Priority: Nutrition and Exercise
The Salvation Army Meals on Wheels program provides nutritionally balanced meals to homebound seniors and disabled adults.  Meals are delivered hot at lunch time by volunteers.  Additional meals can also be delivered for dinner and weekends.  BCHD funds provided:

  • 264 unduplicated residents
  • 2,534 meals
     

South Bay Families Connected
Award Amount: $30,000
Health Priority: Mindfulness, Social-Emotional Learning and Stress Reduction, Substance Use Prevention, Bullying Prevention
A total of 10 parent education workshops were conducted on topics including substance use prevention, social media, bullying prevention, mindfulness and inclusion.

St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Homeless Meals Program
Award Amount: $2,619
Health Priority: Nutrition and Exercise
The homeless meal program at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church provides a hot meal two times a week, 51 weeks of the year.  Individuals can also receive toiletries, exchange dirty clothing for clean clothing and receive supplies from a food pantry.

Torrance YMCA Perry Park Senior Nutrition Program
Award Amount: $25,000
Health Priority: Nutrition and Exercise
The senior nutrition program serves a hot meal at lunch time Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Perry Park Senior Center in Redondo Beach. 

  • 45 unduplicated senior residents
  • 3,114 meals
     

Health Funds
Senior and Disabled Adult Health Fund: $222,000
The Senior and Disabled Adult Health Fund provides direct services for individuals who are enrolled in BCHD’s care management program and meet low-income guidelines.  Direct services include: homemaking assistance, bathing assistance, incontinence supplies, adult day care and emergency response systems.

  • 419 unduplicated clients
  • 24% of clients receive assistance to purchase an emergency response system
  • 32% of clients receive assistance to purchase homemaking assistance
  • 7% of clients receive assistance to purchase incontinence supplies
  • 3% of clients receive assistance to purchase bathing assistance
  • 4 clients receive assistance to purchase adult day care
     

Health Connection Health Fund
Award Amount: $11,604
The Health Connection Health Fund provides direct medical care for those who are uninsured.  Direct care includes a physician visit, lab tests if ordered, and/or dental care for children.  BCHD provides one medical appointment per year and requires the individual to return for insurance counseling and enrollment.
