Yoga Class Strengthens Bones
A new class focusing on strengthening bones is now offered at CHF. Yoga Tune-Up® for Bone Building, created by certified Yoga Tune-Up instructor Via Page, focuses solely on weight-bearing poses and stretches, which, with regular practice, can help increase bone density. Losing bone density is a natural part of the aging process. Osteoporosis, a disease of the bone that increases the risk for fracture, reduces the bone mineral density of the bone.
Recent studies have shown that the risk of osteoporosis is lower for people who do weight-bearing activities. Yoga Tune-Up is a variation of yoga which takes pieces of traditional poses and uses them to strengthen areas of the body that tend to get underused. The class emphasizes postures that work your bones and muscles against gravity. In these postures, your bone builds cells to adapt to the force of your muscles and gravity.
Yoga Tune-Up for Bone Building does not require any previous yoga experience. While the class includes weight-bearing poses, it does not guarantee that test results for bone density will change. Finally, if you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, consult your doctor before taking this class.
