In the Now: Yoga Keeps Us in the Moment
Say shhhh to all that chatter in your mind over the past and the future. By connecting the body, mind and spirit through deep yogic breathing, yoga quiets the mind and helps yogis stay focused on the present moment.
“Just the other day after class, a student told me, ‘My children are going to be happier with me when I get home – I feel so much calmer now after yoga,’” says Sue Lehman, certified yoga instructor of Hatha Yoga I and Hatha Yoga II at the Center for Health and Fitness.
Yogis breathe by filling and expanding the lower belly, then the upper abdomen and then the chest and exhaling fully before taking the next breath. “Done in a controlled way, this helps calm down minds and bodies of both young and old,” says Lehman.
Physical benefits of yoga practice include helping create the flexibility, balance and strength that are assets to injury prevention and postural alignment. CHF offers numerous types of yoga classes (prenatal, family and senior yoga) in a noncompetitive environment.
