Zumba: Feel the Beat
If your aerobics class has lost its luster, consider trying Zumba, a new fitness trend. Samia Tobey, certified Zumba instructor at the Center for Health & Fitness, credits its popularity to its focus on fun, energetic dance moves.
“People just love to dance,” says Tobey. “They can forget about stress and life. I think it’s just really fun.”
Zumba incorporates a series of easy-to-follow dance moves that are derived from a variety of Latin dances, including cumbia, salsa, merengue, flamenco and others, filling the class with energy and making it fun to work out. The dance moves are accompanied by Latin music of varying pace and rhythm.
“I try to use really authentic music,” Tobey says. “I think it’s more inspiring. I try to teach students something about each dance.”
A Zumba workout is a full body aerobic workout and is suitable for all fitness levels and ages, from people in their 20s to people in their 70s. For those looking to lose weight and firm up, Zumba is a terrific way to get results. To sign up for Zumba register online at bchd.org today!
