Daily Nudges for Habit Change

Moais hold us accountable and provide the needed nudges to help us to build good habits for our health. Whether you're walking goals are measured in minutes, steps or miles, having a daily goal keeps us motivated. Kaiser Permanente's Everybody Walk - the movement to get America walking - features resources and articles that support daily walking. In the article "10K Steps + Fitbit" Ceci Connolly highlights how striving for a daily goal like 10,000 steps is beneficial for her to build healthy habits. Connelly points out how, "This is about behavior change and how simple, catchy, achievable tiny habits can become ingrained."

Whether going for a walk, run or bike ride, we tend to seek enjoyable outdoor activities with safety in mind. Depending on how you chose to travel, there are many routes to arrive at your desired destination. Safety needs to be top priority. Beach Cities Health District is starting a safety education campaign called "Streets for All." This campaign is intended to promote awareness for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists about how we interact to make the streets safer for everyone. The campaign will include signage on the road to educate and nudge walkers, riders, and drivers. Using the crosswalk, riding with the flow of traffic and obeying stop signs - these are a few nudges and habit-building reminders that will be included in Streets for All.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, we invite you to participate in the kickoff event for Streets for All. We are looking for volunteers to get involved and help inspire our neighbors to advocate for safer streets. Participate with your moai, your family or come meet new friends.
